The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) held a large bridge tournament this summer in Toronto, Ontario, that attracted players from all over the world. The local organizing committee nominated the Banyan School in Cambodia as their charity.
As a result, the ACBL Charity Foundation Board of Trustees and members of the ACBL presented Barbara Seagram and Patti Lee with a cheque for $5,000 to help build the Banyan School in Cambodia. These funds were raised by the members of the ACBL, who play in special charity bridge games year-round in order to make contributions such as this possible. As well, during this tournament, players were not allowed to take their cell phones into the playing site. Instead, they had to check the cell phones at the door (similar to a 'coat check'). Patti Lee arranged for volunteers to do this job for the 12 days of the tournament. Patti and the many volunteers manned the check-in booth at the tournament and, as a result, raised $2,000 more for the school.
